Manhood and American Political Culture in the Cold War

Manhood and American Political Culture in the Cold War
When Americans talked about politics in the 1950's, they used the language of sex. Politicians were soft or hard on communism; leftists were impotent, feminine, neurotic. Never far from these pinks were perverted, masochistic reds who yielded to the ecstasy of power texas politics roots culture and reform and submission. Manhood texas politics roots culture and reform and American Political Culture in the Cold War argues that this highly sexualized rhetoric was rooted in the social history of mid-century America. Anxieties about the shifting role of women, the soft conformity of men, the troubled matriarchal family texas politics roots culture and reform and the apparent rise of homosexuality all fed the so-called crisis of masculinity. Such anxieties merged with fears of totalitarianism to create an unusually sexually-charged political dynamic. In Arthur Schlesinger's The Vital Center, Cuordileone finds the origins of a new, muscular, anti-communist, liberal self-image, defined against the hopelessly feminine, sentimental liberal Doughface that was purged from the liberal reform tradition. Yet the rise of a tough liberal anti-communism didn't prevent Joseph McCarthy from going on the offensive in the 1950s, railing against effeminate Eastern establishment liberals--the communists texas politics roots culture and reform and queers who lost China texas politics roots culture and reform and betrayed America. The twenty years of treason charge, Cuordileone suggests, was sexually-loaded; so too was the attack on Adlai Stevenson, Adelaide the egghead. The book also shows how liberals in 1960 overcompensated for past deficiencies by reinventing the liberal as a real man, a cold warrior embodied in the figure of John F. Kennedy.
